Week of October 3rd

Mrs. Anderson's Classes
Math - We will work on dividing whole numbers and decimal fractions.  Practicing multiplication drills frequently is a must.  There are several multiplication online resources that will help students learn the multiplication facts.


Please encourage your child to practice daily on TenMarks.  Will your child be the TenMarks Champ this week?

Homework - Turn in the next day when assigned.  We will discuss all homework assignments the following day.
Assessments - All assessments are given Thursday or Friday and will cover material covered in class that week.

Reading - We will continue to determine the difference between theme and main idea.  We will also begin analyzing text structure.  It is very important that students develop solid reading skills. I am teaching various strategies to improve reading comprehension.  Please read with your child to help them find the joy in reading.

Xtramath: Students received their login information on a pink sheet of paper for Xtramath.org. They are expected to practice their math fact fluency on this website at least 3 times a week from school or home. Let me know if you are having trouble logging on.

We will continue to finish publishing our "Best Day Ever" Personal Narrative. We will also discuss how to include dialogue into our narrative writing.


Homework: Students will receive a homework sheet at the beginning of the week, and will have to turn it in on Friday.


Mr. Waters' Classes
Math- We have completed module 1 and are speedily moving into module 2.  You will see a change in the type of work that we are doing, but it is still a continuation of what we have been working on already.

Homework:  Students will receive a packet, front and back,  on Monday.  It consists of all the work we will be doing this week and it will be due on Friday (or earlier!)
Failing grades can be done over for partial credit.

Be on the lookout for the weekly review. This is not considered homework as we do work on it together in class for morning work, but if you would like to see it your student should have it in their folder.  This is a graded assignment worth 10 points (5 bonus points if turned in early), and can really help your child's grade for the 9 weeks.  Please make sure that these are getting done and turned in.  I will be contacting you parents if more than 1 is missing for your child.  I am beginning to see patterns of this not being turned in so please make sure that your child is getting it turned in on time.

Science- We have completed talking about the types of cells and their components, and we are not moving into what types of organisms are made of these cells.  Organisms that are both harmful and beneficial, single-celled and multicellular.  We will be doing a fun lab activity this week to look at the growth of some of these organisms.



Math-   Daily math homework Monday through Thursday.  Monday Unit 2 Lesson 1-3 Problem set Wednesday Lesson 1 exit ticket, Friday Lesson 2 Exit Ticket. 
Students should correct, and study any low grade exit tickets for a retake Tues-Fri 715-745

Science- We have an action packed week ahead of us in science.  We are finished with cells and their parts, and now we are into different types of cells and organisms.  Single and Multi-cellular organisms and their structure/ function will be discussed.  We will use the microscopes again to view some of these organisms!  We will be taking our Unit 1 CDA (Common District Assessment) on Friday so please make sure that your child is at school!   Make sure that your child brings their interactive notebook home to study with starting on Wednesday!  Students will also have homework given to them Monday and due to me on Friday.

Science- We have an exciting week planned in science, we are going to learn the different parts of a microscope and then we will use microscopes to view different types of cells since that's what we've been doing in class.  We will be making "Cell"fies later this week, so make sure to have crayons/colored pencils/etc.  We will also be moving into animal cells and comparing/contrasting the differences between plant and animal cells.  There is a lot more vocabulary that we will be covering so please ask your child about what we have been talking about.  If you would like your child to bring their interactive notebook home  for you to look at please do!  Just make sure that it finds its way back ASAP so that they don't miss putting anything else in it!

Science- We are continuing our study of Life Science, more specifically plant cells. We will be having a quiz on plant cells on Friday.  This unit will be very vocabulary intensive and we will be doing a lot of work in our interactive notebooks.  Please make sure that your child has a notebook as soon as possible as almost every day we are adding new information and it can become too much to keep up with if there is nowhere to put what we are doing in class.  We will be doing a lot of hands on activities and utilizing technology throughout our studies.

Math- Multiplying and dividing by powers of 10 (10, 100, 1000). Converting metric system units. Comparing decimal fractions, rounding decimals.  Review and mid module test.  Daily math homework Monday through Thursday.  Tuesday Lesson 6 Exit Ticket, Friday, mid module test.

Social Studies-   Unit 3 Prelude to the Civil War.  "Who was John Brown?" What effect did "Uncle Tom's Cabin" have on public opinions concerning slavery?  Who were the most influential abolitionists?  The election of 1860.  What were "states rights"?  Quiz Thursday.
