Week of September 24th

Grammar/Writing
We will begin our informational writing unit. Students will learn to write extended response essays on content covered in social studies and science. Students will also learn how to organize their writing using graphic organizers and sentence starters. This week will focus  on building body paragraphs and conclusions.

Math
Your child will be working on adding and subtracting decimals in class.


Reading
Your child will be learning about identifying different text structures in informational text. Students will practice reading paired passages and using graphic organizers to gain deeper understanding of the information that they read.

Science
Your child will be practicing Close Reading Strategies.  Close Reading helps with Comprehension and is essential in the reading process.  We are developing our grasp of the RACE strategy, which is a process used to answer Constructed Responses. Our topics include constructive and destructive forces, landforms, the Earth's plates.

Social Studies
Your child will be practicing Close Reading Strategies to gain deeper understanding of social studies topics. We are currently learning about events that impacted the Turn of the Century.

Week of September 17

Grammar/Writing
We will begin our informational writing unit. Students will learn to write extended response essays on content covered in social studies and science. Students will also learn how to organize their writing using graphic organizers and sentence starters. This week will focus primarily on introductions (thesis).

Math
Your child will be working on decimal numbers. Our focus will be adding and subtracting decimals. Students will work in centers to practice skills.


Reading
Your child will be learning about identifying different text structures in informational text. Students will practice reading paired passages and using graphic organizers to gain deeper understanding of the information that they read.

Science
Your child will be practicing Close Reading Strategies.  Close Reading helps with Comprehension and is essential in the reading process.  We are developing our grasp of the RACE strategy, which is a process used to answer Constructed Responses. Week of September 10th

Grammar/Writing
We will continue our Narrative Writing Unit this week.  We discussed important people last week and will continue brainstorming and writing about important events and places this week. We will be focusing on the progression of their personal narrative. We will discuss details such as, details and adding transitions to help their story flow. We will also discuss different ways to conclude their paragraphs. Encourage your child to journal every night.

Math
Your child will be working on decimal numbers.  Along with continuing with reading and writing numbers in standard, expanded and word form, he or she will be rounding, ordering and comparing decimal numbers as well.


Reading
Your child will continue to build their close reading skills as we begin learning about theme. Students will continue to practice RACE strategies to answer comprehension questions.  

Science
Your child will be practicing Close Reading Strategies.  Close Reading helps with Comprehension and is essential in the reading process.  We are developing our grasp of the RACE strategy, which is a process used to answer Constructed Responses.

Your child will be practicing Close Reading Strategies to gain deeper understanding of social studies topics. We will be discussing the rights and responsibilities that are protected by the constitution. We also will discuss the amendment process.
