Week of May 1st

Mrs. Anderson's Classes

We will review standards this week.  Please remind your child that the school year is not over.   We will continue to work hard to prepare for 6th grade.

Math - Focus will be on analyzing math word problems.

Reading - Focus will be on point of view and character analysis.  We will read, Maniac Magee.


*Graded math (Anderson's homeroom only) and reading assignments will no longer be sent home in the Dolphin Folder.  I will maintain reading portfolios for all 5th grade students.  I welcome the opportunity to conference with you in order to discuss your child's progress.

Ms. Lewis' Classes
Math
Overview: This week we will review all previous standards. Students will be given a math topic and create a lesson.


Homework: Check agenda. Check Edmodo daily for updates and information.

Fluency Practice: All students are asked to practice fluency at least 3 times a week using www.xtramath.org. Each student has their username and pin on a red sheet in the front of their agenda. If it asks for an email address, use: radiance.lewis@douglas.k12.ga.us

Assessments: There will be weekly assessments based on what has been covered in class. Any failing grades can be corrected and returned for partial credit.

ELA
Overview: This week we will review previous standards, work with poetry, and create informational essays on a career of choice.


Homework:  Check Edmodo for updates and information. Study past vocabulary words.

Assessments: There will be weekly assessments. Most assessments will include constructed response questions that should be answered using the 1-2-3 method that is being used in class. Any failing grades and be corrected and returned for partial credit.

Ms. Palmer's Classes
Math-
We will review all math standards.


Xtramath: Students received their login information on a pink sheet of paper for Xtramath.org. They are expected to practice their math fact fluency on this website at least 3 times a week from school or home. Let me know if you are having trouble logging on.

Assessments: Students will be assessed weekly based on information covered in the classroom. Students should use their math notebook as a helpful study tool. 
Failing grades can be done over for partial credit.


Homework: Math homework will be assigned on Monday and will be expected to be turned in on Friday morning. I will not collect homework until Friday morning. 


Writing-
We will begin our research for our career choice essay project.

Homework: No Homework

Mr. Waters' Classes
Math- We are still working on the coordinate plane.  We will be taking our CDA test on 3D Figures and on the coordinate plane this week.  Weekly reviews are back, so make sure to ask you child about it!
Here is a great resource to use for word problems for all topics we have discussed.
Failing grades can be done over for partial credit.

Science- We will be finishing our unit on Earth Science this week and taking our test before the end of the week.  .  This is a very vocabulary heavy unit (26 words/terms).  Students have a vocabulary list that is homework to study each and every night.   Please make sure to review as much as possible as we go through this unit. Students will have more homework over the course of this unit so please be on the lookout!  There are a lot of new additions to our Symbaloo page and videos that you can view to help you understand better what we are doing in this unit. Your child should know how to log into this.




Students should be reading 15 minutes per day and recording it in their reading logs.  Continue to get agendas signed daily.  Students will need their agenda at school for class time restroom breaks.

I'm wishing everyone a well rested SPRING BREAK!  Please keep in mind that we will begin GMAS testing the week we return.  Taking only 30 minutes to an hour each day to practice is so important.  I'm asking that students go to tenmarks.com, readtheory.org and educationgalaxy.com .

Homework - Turn in the next day when assigned.  We will discuss all homework assignments the following day.
Assessments - All assessments are given Thursday or Friday and will cover material covered in class that week.

Reading - We will continue to focus on informational reading and test taking strategies. Please encourage your children to put forth their best effort and use the strategies to better understand the material.  Students are strongly advised to practice reading using www.readtheory.org and http://educationgalaxy.com/  .

Math- We are in the middle of studying the coordinate plane along with polygons and all of the attribute that are associated with them.  We will have a lot of note taking to do in class, but we will also be taking a in house "field trip", where we walk around the school looking for different polygons based on what we have discussed in class.
