Week of September 4th

Grammar/Writing
We will continue our Narrative Writing Unit this week.  We discussed important people last week and will continue brainstorming and writing about important events and places this week. We will be focusing on the progression of their personal narrative. We will discuss details such as, details and adding transitions to help their story flow. We will also discuss different ways to conclude their paragraphs. Encourage your child to journal every night.

Math
Your child will be working on decimal numbers.  Along with continuing with reading and writing numbers in standard, expanded and word form, he or she will be rounding, ordering and comparing decimal numbers as well.


Reading
Your child will continue to build their close reading skills as we begin learning about theme. Students will continue to practice RACE strategies to answer comprehension questions.  

Science
Your child will be practicing Close Reading Strategies.  Close Reading helps with Comprehension and is essential in the reading process.  We are developing our grasp of the RACE strategy, which is a process used to answer Constructed Responses. 

Social Studies
Your child will be practicing Close Reading Strategies to gain deeper understanding of social studies topics. We will be discussing the rights and responsibilities that are protected by the constitution. We also will discuss the amendment process.

Week of August 27th

Grammar/Writing

Grammar/Writing

He or she will be reading and writing numbers in standard, expanded and word form.

We are focusing on landforms and constructive and destructive forces.  The Earth is moving and changing daily, so we are exploring how that happens!

Social Studies
Citizenship is being reviewed along with rights and responsibilities along with the Amendment Process.

Week of August 13th

Welcome to your child's final year of elementary school!  We are beyond excited to welcome you to our fifth grade community and can not wait to begin working with you and your child this year.  Please subscribe to receive weekly updates about 5th grade happenings as well as a snapshot of learning goals for each class.

Our first week was dedicated to introductions, reviewing classroom and school wide procedures and administering diagnostic tests.

Ms. Summers' Classes
Math: 
Students will be be reviewing volume, converting units of capacity, metric conversions, line plots, classifying shapes, and coordinate grids.   Homework is due Friday.
**Math homework will be given Monday to be turned in on Friday.  This is taken as a grade if completed, so please use the homework to review concepts with your child.  Xtramath can also be used to increase math fluency.
Did you know:  The homework is a great way to see what we are doing in class.  The Khan Academy link on the blog has tutorial videos that can help you, the parent, as well as your child practice the strategies we teach in class.  Edmodo is also a good resource for tutorial videos and practice games.

ELA:
We will not have a mentor text this week. Our grammar focus will be verb tenses.
Our Affixes of the Week is trans.
Our vocabulary words for the week are: NONE
Please utilize Edmodo for games and tutorial videos at home.




Ms. Palmer's Classes
Math: 
We will continue our 2-D shapes unit. We will focus on classifying triangles and quadrilaterals based on their attributes. Students made a red fold-able as a tool to help with homework questions.


Homework will be given on Mondays and will be collected on Friday mornings. Home will be taken for a weekly participation grade. Please have students log on to xtramath.org in their spare time, to help with basic fact fluency. Also, tenmarks.com is an awesome resource for students to practice concepts taught in class. Students have login information in their agendas.

Writing: 
We will continue our opinion writing unit. We will continue to work on building strong introductions, and focus on building our body paragraphs with valid reasons and examples.

No writing homework!

We will working on the following:  Finding the volume of composed figures, polygons, triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene),and quadrilaterals (parallelogram, trapezoid, rectangle, rhombus, square).   Students must continue to practice fractions daily.
